[5.13] HST search for halo binaries

B. Riaz, J. E. Gizis (Univ. of Delaware)

We discuss an ongoing survey on the search for very low mass binaries in the halo of the Galaxy. We have performed photometry on 17 stars out of a sample of 35 sdM's and esdM's. The images were obtained using the HST ACS camera. Our aim is to determine the binary fraction of such stars in the halo, and to possibly identify a system which is suitable for determining accurate masses of the components. We discuss the implications of our results for the star formation in the early Galaxy.
