[40.15] Deep CO(1-0) Imaging of the Edge-On Starburst Galaxy NGC 2146

We present deep CO(1-0) interferometric images of the central region of the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 2146 observed with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array.

NGC 2146 is a nearby (17.2 Mpc; Tully 1988), IR luminous (6x1010 solar luminosity) galaxy with disturbed appearance and 100 kpc scale neutral hydrogen tidal tails, which are similar characteristics to those of the prototypical starburst galaxy M82. Our CO(1-0) image shows that the most of the CO emission is concentrated along the galactic disk, which is consistent with the past interferometric CO(1-0) observations. The kinematics of the majority of the CO(1-0) emission are indicative of normal galactic disk rotation. We also detected diffuse and extended CO emission. This weak emission shows more disturbed kinematics, which suggests the existence of molecular outflows or tidal streams. We also discuss the relation between the CO and X-ray emissions based on our X-ray data observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
