[44.06] Line Profiles and Gas Dynamics in AGN

K.S.J. Anderson, S. A. Snedden, D.C. Long (New Mexico State University/Apache Point Observatory)

Line profiles observed in AGN are largely shaped by the macroscopic motions of the emitting or absorbing gas. Emission line widths imply velocities approaching 0.05c in some instances. We use permitted line profiles obtained for a large sample of Type 1 AGN to investigate the gas kinematics of their broad-line regions. Our AGN and their spectra are drawn from the first data release (DR1) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Individual line profiles are characterized by measures of flux, velocity width, and asymmetry. We present the distributions of these quantities for the sample galaxies and look for correlations among these observables and with other properties of the sample galaxies.
