I will review theoretical models for the high X-ray fluxes from ULXs. Do these fluxes really imply intermediate black-hole masses, or could they result from geometrical effects such as mild beaming by an accretion funnel or relativistic jet? Is it possible that ULXs are truly radiating at a super-Eddington rate? I will discuss geometric and physical constraints imposed by observations, and observational signatures of the various models. My work on ULXs is supported by grants from NASA (NAG5-12035, Astrophysical Theory Program) and NSF (AST-0307502).
