[59.05] The Structure of the Galactic Center Snake

The Very Large Array has been used to carry out a mulitfrequency, polarimetric study of the nonthermal filament (NTF) G359.1-0.2, also known as the Snake. This Galactic Center NTF was observed using both the CnB and DnC arrays at 4.9 and 8.5 GHz with angular resolution of 3"-8".

The Snake is a synchrotron-emitting source that is linearly polarized over much of it extent. The rotation measure varies with large values ranging up to 5000 rad m-2. The intrinsic magnetic field is well aligned along the entire length of this NTF.
