Studies of the evolution of damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorbers in quasar spectra are believed to offer important constraints on the history of star formation and heavy element production in galaxies. We report recent observations of DLAs and determinations of element abundances in these DLAs. We discuss the implications of our results for the evolution of DLAs and the evolution of galaxies, in general.
