[2.21] Periodogram Analysis of Sunspot Numbers and Areas

M. L. Rogers, M. T. Richards (Penn State University)

We have analyzed archival data on sunspot numbers from 1749 - 2004 and sunspot areas from 1874 - 2004 to derive the solar activity cycles based on these variables. We used two independent techniques in this analysis. We have identified the well-known 11-year Schwabe cycle, the 22-year Hale cycle, the 80-90-year Gleissberg cycle, as well as a cycle at approximately 10 years.
