[15.01] Finding Filaments with a New Algorithm to Ferret Out Structures in Simulations

L. A. Phillips (Caltech)

We present a new method for defining and extracting structures in large scale hydrodynamical simulations. This method is used to cull a well-defined sample of filaments and groups from simulations in order to study the warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). We look at the entropy, density profile and temperature distribution of the gas in these filaments and groups and explore the relationships between these parameters. In our quest to obtain a better understanding of the physical properties and extent of the WHIM, we move beyond a threshold-based definition of this component to take a first look at the topology and geometry of this important baryon reservoir.
