[75.03] The Palomar-Quest Survey

The Palomar-Quest (PQ) survey is a major, new, digital, synoptic sky survey which uses the new 112-CCD camera at the Palomar 48-inch Samuel Oschin Schmidt telescope. The survey will cover up to 15,000 deg2 in 7 filters, with multiple observations over the time baselines ranging from days to years, ultimately reaching twice the depth of SDSS in coadded data, and opening a new window into the exploration of the time domain in astronomy.

The survey will enable a broad range of scientific studies, including: a large survey for QSOs and strong lenses, to be used as cosmological and dark matter probes; a new survey for high-redshift (z ~ 4 - 6.5) QSOs, to be used as probes of early structure formation and reionization; a search for SNe of both types I and II, to be used as cosmological probes, and for studies of the end states of evolution of massive stars; studies of various types of variable stars and AGN; real-time discoveries of optical transients; and many others.

This will be the first major sky survey designed and conducted in the NVO era, using the emerging technology and infrastructure of the NVO to archive, analyze, and distribute the data. We also envision a significant EPO effort associated with the survey.
