[19.03] Improved modelling of gravitational waves from LMXBs

A. L. Watts (NASA GSFC), N. Andersson (School of Mathematics, Southampton University)

Accreting neutron stars in LMXBs are potentially promising sources of gravitational radiation. We discuss the modelling of these systems, including key issues concerning variability of the accretion spin-up torque. The associated variability in the signal from various gravitational-wave mechanisms (accretion induced asymmetries, toroidal magnetic fields or unstable r-modes) is considered, and we assess the detectability of these sources.
