Accreting neutron stars in LMXBs are potentially promising sources of gravitational radiation. We discuss the modelling of these systems, including key issues concerning variability of the accretion spin-up torque. The associated variability in the signal from various gravitational-wave mechanisms (accretion induced asymmetries, toroidal magnetic fields or unstable r-modes) is considered, and we assess the detectability of these sources.
