We present VLT-ISAAC near-IR images of the N49 region in the LMC. This supernova remnant also contains the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 0526-66. We discuss the possible association of this magnetar with a nearby star cluster. A SGR-cluster association has now been found for three SGRs, and we discuss the implications of this link for evolutionary scenarios of SGRs, AXPs, and normal pulsars.
