[16.21] Thick CZT Detectors for Space Borne X-Ray Astronomy

I. Jung, H. Krawczynski, J. Perkins, A. Garson (Washington University in St. Louis), A. Burger, M. Groza (Fisk)

Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) has emerged as the detector material of choice for X-ray imaging spectroscopy in the 10 keV to 600 keV energy range. We contacted 0.5 mm thick substrates from the companies IMARAD, eV-Products, and Bicron with Gold and Platinum. In this contribution, we present a complete characterization of detectors with pixellated anodes (2.5 mm pitch) and monolithic cathodes. In addition, we discuss how to obtain the best estimate of the interaction location (3-D) and the photon energy for all photons striking the detector, including photons that hit the detector in-between adjacent anode pixels.
