We report on the spectral and temporal variability of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5204 X-1. NGC 5204 was observed with Chandra for 50ks on 5 August 2003 and in a series of 10 follow-up 5ks observations every apx. 3 days. The observations were conducted in a 1/8 subarray both to mitigate pile-up and to allow for higher timing resolution. This unique dataset allows us to monitor changes in spectral state in the short term (during the 50ks observation) and over the course of a month. We discuss the implications of these results on source classifcation and, in particular, on the mass of the compact object as either intermediate-mass or stellar-mass black hole.
