W. Zhang (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center), Generation-X Vision Mission Team
Generation-X is envisioned to be an X-ray observatory with an extremely large photon collection area (~100 m2) and exquisite angular resolution (~ 0.1"). It will have both high resolution imaging detector systems and high spectral resolution grating systems. It presents unprecedented challenges in optics and detector technologies. In this paper we will discuss its technological implications and challenges and possible scenarios to address them. We will outline a plan of technology development over the next couple of decades to meet those challenges.
