We have examined archival images of gamma-ray bursts taken with the Optical Monitor on the XMM-Newton Observatory. We find a source in a V-band image of the field of the nearby (z = 0.1055) gamma-ray burst GRB 031203 that was taken approximately seven hours after the burst. The position of this source coincides with the location of the X-ray afterglow. The source has a magnitude of V = 20.4 ±0.2, which is consistent with the expected magnitude of the host galaxy. This suggests that the optical afterglow of GRB 031203 was unusually faint.
