[5.02] The Wide Field Camera 3 Detectors

The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), a fourth-generation instrument planned for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), is currently undergoing integration and testing at Goddard Space Flight Center. As a panchromatic UV/visible/near-infrared instrument, WFC3 consists of both UVIS (200-1000nm) and IR (850-1700nm) channels. The UVIS channel features a 4096x4096 pixel E2V Technologies CCD, an image scale of 0.04 arcsec/pix, a 160x160 arcsec field of view, and 47 filters plus an ultraviolet grism. The IR channel features a 1014x1014 pixel Rockwell Scientific HgCdTe focal plane array, an image scale of 0.13 arcsec/pix, a 139x123 arcsec field of view, and 17 filters plus two grisms. The detectors were initially selected based upon testing performed at the NASA Goddard Detector Characterization Lab. After integration into the instrument, further testing has recently been performed at Goddard under ambient and thermal vacuum conditions. This report summarizes the results of those tests and updates the performance characteristics of both detectors.
