[137.02] Sample Bubble Morphologies in the Glimpse Survey

GLIMPSE (Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire) imaging using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed numerous "bubbles": shells of infra-red luminous dust and gas. The imaged bubbles encompass a wide range of size scales and morphologies. Mosaic images are presented to illustrate different types of observed recurring bubble morphological structures.

The high spatial resolution of GLIMPSE (~2") shows filamentary structure within many bubbles. Three of the four GLIMPSE bands contain aromatic hydrocarbon features (3.6, 5.8, and 8.0 micrometer bands), while the 4.5 micrometer band contains no aromatic hydrocarbon feature and therefore provides a basis for comparison with the other bands.
