[71.06] Absolute Visual Light Curves of Supernovae in GRB Afterglows

From the available data, we examine the R magnitude afterglow light curves of 13 GRBs which have been associated with supernovae. The jet component of the light curve (and, if necessary, the host galaxy light) is subtracted. Two-filter K-corrections are estimated from the spectra of SN 1998bw in order to convert from R band to V band. The supernova absolute magnitude is calculated taking the foreground extinction and distance into account; standard lambda-CDM cosmology is assumed. Using a method developed for a comparative study of stripped-envelope supernovae (Richardson et al. 2004, in preparation) we analyze the resulting supernova absolute light curves. When possible we use spectra to constrain the ratio of kinetic energy to ejected mass. A grid of parameter values is searched to find the best fit. From this, an estimate of the kinetic energy, ejected mass, nickel mass and rise time for each supernova is obtained.
