[62.07] The X-ray Luminosity Function of Star-forming Galaxies in the GOODS

Chandra has afforded the first opportunity to determine the X-ray emitting properties of normal and star-forming galaxies at cosmologically interesting redshifts. In this poster we report on our measurement of the normal/starburst galaxy X-ray Luminosity Function (XLF) in the two GOODS fields. We derive the cosmological star formation rate, finding evolution consistent with (1+z)3. This XLF measurement uses an improved version of a Bayesian statistical method we have developed to distinguish galaxies from either obscured or unobscured AGN. This statistical method is critical as optical spectroscopic identification alone cannot identify all the X-ray luminous AGN. GOODS allows us to bring optical morphological classes and optical/NIR Spectral Energy Distributions of the GOODS galaxies into the classification system.

We gratefully acknowledge NASA LTSA grant NNG04GE13G (AFP), ESA funding (BM) and Chandra postdoctoral fellowship funding (AEH and FEB).
