[75.02] AGN in Clusters of Galaxies

Chandra and Magellan observations have uncovered an unexpectedly high fraction of AGN in clusters of galaxies. These observations reveal luminous, hard X-ray emission from galaxies that often do not exhibit AGN spectra signatures. The AGN fraction in clusters, selected with X-ray observations, now appears to be several times higher than previous measurements based on visible-wavelength spectroscopy alone. We describe our photometric and spectroscopic observations of AGN in clusters of galaxies, the AGN host galaxy population, and evidence for variation in the AGN population from cluster to cluster. We also discuss the implications of this work for black hole accretion and galaxy evolution in clusters.
