[165.01] The Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS): an overview

The Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS) consortium currently operates four 1m-class telescopes at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO) in Chile. Consortium members contribute money, effort, and instrumentation, including most of the operating expenses of the facility - the community retains at least 25% of the time, allocated through NOAO. This special session presents the range of scientific activities being conducted at SMARTS. This talk will set the scene by briefly introducing the facilities involved, the operational philosophy of the consortium, and our plans for the future.
