[164.04] Particle Acceleration via Electromagnetic Explosion and Gamma-Ray Bursts

E. Liang, K. Noguchi (Rice University)

We report latest results on particle acceleration via electromagnetic (EM) explosion and potential applications to gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emissons. Using multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of electromagnetic-dominated plasma expansion we reproduce many of the telltale signatures of GRBs, including their light curves, spectra and spectral evolution. We have upgraded the PIC codes to include radiation and radiation reaction. This allows us to trace the observable light curves, spectral hardness and polarization as measured in the detector frame. Interaction of the accelerated particles and EM pulse with the ambient medium will also be discussed.
