[52.03] Chemical Abundances from Spectra of Bright Stars

M.L. West, M.C. McCrary (Montclair State University)

This undergraduate project involved taking low dispersion grating spectra of bright stars using a fiber-fed Sivo spectroscope and a 12 inch Meade LX200 telescope. The stars are classified into spectral types using Visual Spec software by Valerie Desnoux and the Digital Spectral Classification Atlas by Richard O. Gray, and their chemical composition is estimated by comparison with the synthetic stellar spectra generated by SPECTRUM also by Richard Gray. The target stars were chosen for their various metallicities and possible interactions with interesting regions of the interstellar medium.
