[25.02] Keck/Deimos Spectroscopy of a GALEX UV selected sample from the Medium Imaging Survey

We report results from a pilot program to obtain spectroscopy of sources selected from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer Medium Imaging Survey. We obtained spectra for 75 GALEX sources reaching NUV=23 (AB mag), most of which also have counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We obtained 63 redshfits, of which 45 are emission line galaxies with z<0.7, and 4 objects with z>1, including a quasar at z=2.862. We are able to use emission line diagnostics for 17 galaxies to confirm that theyare mostly star forming galaxies with one possible AGN. Using the techniques of Salim et al. 2004, we estimate stellar masses, metallicity, star formation rates (SFR), and the starburst Kennicutt b parameter for these galaxies. The stellar masses of the galaxies range from 108 to 1011 M\odot and reliable SFRs are between 10-1 and 10 M\odot/year. We compare this sample to the properties of the SDSS spectroscopic Main Galaxy Sample.

GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) is a NASA Small Explorer, launched in April 2003. We gratefully acknowledge NASA's support for construction, operation, and science analysis for the GALEX mission.
