[159.03] VY Scl CV low states

S. Kafka, R.K. Honeycutt (Indiana University)

Fourteen years of photometric CV monitoring has provided a unique data set on ~ 65 nova-like and 8 magnetic systems, a small fraction of which display large (2-5 mag) drops in their optical light curves (VY Scl states). The speeds and shapes of the transitions for magnetic (polar) and non-magnetic systems are discussed. The character of the transitions in the disk-type VY Scl system appear to be consistent with disruption of mass transfer due to starspots migrating under the L1 point. The transitions in polars, varying from system to system, are difficult to fit into the same picture.
