[14.05] WOCS Variability Study: NGC 188 revised

S. Cortes (Clemson University), S. Kafka (Indiana University), C. Claver (KPNO/NOAO)

We present a variability study of the old (7.0+/-0.5Gy) open cluster NGC 188 as a part of the WIYN Open Cluster Study (WOCS). Data were acquired with the KPNO 4-m telescope/T2KB CCD during 4 dark photometric nights in November of 1996. Two filters (V & I) were used covering the 20'x20' central region of the cluster. We discuss our data reduction techniques, including use of AstroVar, a custom interactive program based on the method of incomplete ensemble photometry. As a result of our search, a number of variable stars were recovered. Among them, we exhibit the W UMa systems of the cluster, a couple of which appear to display unequal maxima in their light curves (likely due to the presence of star spots) plus a new eclipsing system.
