[143.20] A Search For Extremely Dust-Reddened Quasars

B. A. Feldman, T. C. Urrutia, R. H. Becker, M. D. Gregg (UC Davis / IGPP LLNL)

The FIRST/2MASS survery (Glikman et al. 2004) was successful in providing color selection criteria suitable for finding highly obscured quasars. We report on a search for these objects using the FIRST radio survey, the 2MASS near-infrared survey, and the SDSS survey. Our candidates had to have counterparts within 2" of each other in all surveys and have very red colors (r' - K > 5). We expect about 50 quasar" population. We present preliminary follow-up results with SPEX, an infrared spectrograph on IRTF. By expanding the number of red quasars in our FIRST/2MASS sample, we will be able to access the fraction of obscured quasars at r' < 20.
