In our galaxy, there are approximately 160 known LMXBs. Of these, type I X-ray bursts have been detected in about 70. However, type I X-ray bursts have yet to be detected in LMXBs outside of the Milky Way. The XMM-Newton instrument allows detailed examination of X-ray sources in other galaxies with sensitivities never before achievable. We have searched the entire XMM-Newton data archive for type I X-ray burst events in M31, anticipating that long-lasting bursts should be detectable. We report the results of this search, and quantitatively compare the LMXB population in the Milky Way to our nearest full-sized galactic neighbor, in Andromeda.
