[19.03] Report From The Front Line: What I Learned by Using Active Learning Techniques

I attended the New Faculty Workshop in 1999 and have tried all but one of the techniques I learned there. I will share my experiences, good, bad and ugly, with an emphasis on what has proved most useful and why. The focus will be on the large (120 students per lecture) introductory astronomy courses my department offers, but I will briefly discuss the application of the techniques to physics and other astronomy courses. A summary of more formal assessment data on student performance in the astronomy course will also be presented.

Some of the activities described in this talk were supported by a grant from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Center for Teaching and Learning and through a grant from the Lead Technology Committee at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
