[12.05] Spirals, Bridges, and Tails: A GALEX Atlas of Interacting Galaxies

M. L. Giroux, B. J. Smith (ETSU), C. Struck (ISU), P. N. Appleton (SSC), V. Charmandaris (Univ. Crete/Cornell)

We present new GALEX ultraviolet images from a survey of strongly interacting galaxy pairs, and compare with images at other wavelengths. The tidal features are particularly striking in these UV images. Numerous knots of star formation are visible throughout the disks and the tails and bridges. We compare the ultraviolet colors of the tidal features with those of the main galaxies, and use these colors to estimate stellar population ages. This research is sponsored by NASA grant GALEXGI04-0000-0026.
