[14.02] Ultimate Limits to Precision Astrometry with the SIM PlanetQuest Mission

R. Sridharan, R. J. Allen (Space Telescope Science Institute)

We are initiating a program to study factors which limit the ultimate astrometric accuracy of the Space Interferometry Mission. Our study is aimed in particular at modelling and quantifying the disturbances caused by the presence of additional (faint) confusing sources within the SIM field of view. An important question to address is whether this confusion will limit the ultimate accuracy of planet search projects with SIM before we reach the limits imposed by the SIM instrument itself.

This work will be funded by the NASA SIM Project Office at JPL.
