R. L. Phelps (National Science Foundation)
The National Science Board has mandated that National Science Foundation (NSF) proposals that do not separately address the ``Intellectual Merit" and ``Broader Impact" of the proposed work, within the one page Project Summary, must be returned without review. It is, therefore, important for the community to understand the role that this criteria plays in an NSF proposal. Education and public outreach (EPO) activities satisfy the ``Broader Impact" criteria, but other activities qualify as well. I will discuss this proposal requirement, and also discuss EPO opportunities, both within the Division of Astronomical Sciences (AST), and elsewhere within the Foundation.
