[30.15] The Remarkable X-ray Jet Structures in the Quasar 4C 20.24

We report on the Chandra observations of the large scale jet in 4C 20.24 (= PKS B1055+201). This is one of the longest X-ray jets seen in a quasar, extending 23 arcsec from the quasar core. This corresponds to 190 kpc in the plane of the sky, for the redshift z=1.11 of the quasar. The jet luminosity in X-rays is about 2.5 x 1044 erg s-1, about 2 percent of the core X-ray luminosity. The arcsec scale X-ray and 1.46 GHz jets initially follow the direction of the VLBA jet emanating N from the 0.2 mas core, but then curve to the NNW through a total change in angle of about 45 degrees. This system is unique in that we clearly observe a broader region of X-ray emission enclosing both the jet to the North, and an unseen counter jet to the South!
