[30.08] Composition of ultra-relativistic jets

M. Lyutikov (UBC)

AGN jets are launched and collimated by magnetic fields originating in accretion disk around central black hole. The fate of these magnetic fields in (kilo)-parsec scale jets remains unclear: they may either transfer their energy to matter or may remain dominant until very large distances. These two possibilities lead to different paradigms for particle acceleration: shocks in matter-dominated jets and magnetic dissipation in Poynting flux-dominated jets.
