[30.01] AGN Jets and their X-ray Emission

From the perspective of an X-ray observer, we review some current issues: the sizes and luminosities of AGN jets and their miniature galactic counterparts; a few things we think we know; and some other things we don't know but would like to know.

Our view of the current X-ray situation is that the paramount question at this juncture is the nature of the X-ray emission mechanism for powerful jets from quasars and FRII radio galaxies. For FRI jets, the evidence strongly supports the synchrotron process. We discuss the various tests (applicable to all jets) that may help us distinguish between synchrotron and inverse Compton models.

The results of new Chandra data for a few low and high power jets (e.g. M87 and 3C273) will be given and related to the debate on the emission process. The prospects for progress in our understanding the emission mechanisms and the larger questions about the underlying jet physics will be mentioned.
