[61.07] Breaking up the gravitationally bound ring particle aggregates

R.M. Karjalainen (University of Oulu)

The gravitationally bound ring particle aggregates are formed in the outer parts of Saturn's rings (Karjalainen and Salo 2004, Icarus 172, 328). The break up of these ring particle aggregates is studied with local N-body simulations by colliding the aggregates with ring particles of different sizes. As a result of these collisions there is either accretion into the particle aggregate, bounce from the aggregate, or partial or total destruction of the ring particle aggregate, depending on the collision properties.

The support from Magnus Ehrnrooth foundation is acknowledged.
