As part of pre-impact target characterization efforts, long-slit spectroscopic observations were obtained with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck I telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii on December 4, 2004, January 6 and June 7, 2005 to monitor the onset of the gaseous species: CN, C2, NH2 and C3. The December data showed weak but detectable emission of CN, and this feature developed to a strong band by early January 2005. The June data showed emissions from OH, NH, CN, C2, C3 and NH2. A simple Haser model was used to convert the column densities to gas production rates. In January the production derived production rates were log Q(CN)=23.4, log Q(C3) = 23.0, log Q(C2) = 23.3.
