[71.17] New BVRI Photometry of the Hyades

M.D. Joner, B.J. Taylor (BYU), C.D. Laney, F. van Wyk (SAAO)

New BVRI observations of 77 selected members of the Hyades cluster are reported and discussed. The new data were secured using a photoelectric photometer on the 0.5-m telescope at the Sutherland site operated by the South African Astronomical Observatory. The observed values of V-R, R-I, and V-I are most certainly on the photometric system established by Cousins.

The new observations are used to test published magnitudes and color indices for the Hyades cluster. For values of V-R and R-I published previously by Taylor and Joner, the tests reveal no detectable scale-factor problems. In addition, the tests show that possible zero-point corrections to the published data can be no larger than a few mmag. Tests of B-V photometry published by Johnson and Knuckles reveal a zero-point ambiguity in the new data that will require further measurements to resolve.

These test results indicate that future studies that require precision photometry for the Hyades stars would be well served by selecting data samples from sources that are as close as possible to the native Cousins system.
