We use high-resolution N-body simulations to compute the number of halos in the high redshift universe, and we compare the results with analytic predictions. We model gas cooling in these halos in order to calculate the number of halos capable of hosting stars and galaxies in the pre-reionized universe (the ``dark ages"). We discuss possibilities for observing these high redshift objects.
