[125.01] Characterization Tests of WFC3 Filters

Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) is a facility instrument intended for installation on HST during the next servicing mission. The camera is comprised of two channels (UVIS and IR); each channel has its own set of filters. The UVIS side contains 48 elements (42 filters, 5 quads, and 1 UV grism) while the IR side contains 17 elements (15 filters and 2 grisms). During ground testing, the majority of the UVIS filters were found to exhibit excellent performance consistent with or exceeding expectations; however, a subset of filters showed filter ghosting. Improved replacement filters have been procured; not only have the filter ghosts been reduced but in many cases, the newer technology provided higher filter throughputs. No filter ghosting was detected in the IR channel elements; however, due to the significantly improved response blueward of 800nm expected in the new substrate-removed IR detector, two IR filters originally constructed on a fused silica substrate are being remade using an IR-transmitting color glass to block any visible light transmission. This poster summarizes the characterization tests performed on the replacement WFC3 UVIS and IR filters.
