[120.06] Using PCA to Determine Metal-line, HI Column Density Correlations in QSO Absorbers

T. S. Hamilton (Shawnee State Univ.), S. M. Rao, D. A. Turnshek (Univ. of Pittsburgh), D. B. Nestor (Univ. of Florida), A. Quider (Univ. of Pittsburgh), A. Weyant (Carnegie Mellon Univ.)

Since QSO damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) are rare and UV spectroscopy is required to detect Ly\alpha at z<1.65, it is desirable to have new methods to quantify the neutral gas content of the low-redshift universe. We are exploring the MgII selection method of Rao et al.~(2005) by considering additional absorption-line system properties. We compare the relative success of different approaches to identifying DLA systems using Principal Components Analysis (PCA), multiple regression, and cuts in parameter space.
