[62.07] The Local Starburst Galaxy Luminosity Function In The COSMOS 2 Square Degree Field

We present the luminosity function (LF) of starburst galaxies with redshift z < 0.3, using a sample of 12,785 strongly star-forming (spectral type Sc or bluer) galaxies with robust photometric redshift measurements from the COSMOS two square degree survey. We use a modified maximum likelihood method to account for uncertainty in the photometric redshifts, and employ a bootstrapping technique to account for any systematic errors introduced. The LF is characterized by a Schechter function with a very steep faint end slope of \alpha = -1.8 +/- 0.1 for the redshift bin 0.02 < z < 0.15 down to M(v) = -13, and for 0.15 < z < 0.30 down to M(v) = -15. We characterize the morphology distribution of faint starburst galaxies in this low redshift range, in terms of the fraction of compact (nucleated), irregular, and low surface-brightness galaxies respectively.

We gratefully acknowledge support from NASA via grant HST-GO-09822 to the City University of New York, and from the City University of New York CIRG grant program.
