[22.03] Constraining the History of Galaxy Star Formation and Metal Enrichment

S. R. Heap (NASA's GSFC), D. J. Lindler (Sigma/ACC, GSFC)

Recently, Gallazzi, Charlot et al. (2005) derived not only the recent star-formation history but also stellar metallicities and light-weighted ages of nearby galaxies from SDSS spectra. The authors are now collaborating with Bruzual, Charlot, and Gallazzi to extend their work to higher redshifts, where surveys are collecting thousands of rest-frame ultraviolet and optical spectra of galaxies. We will report on the the first stage of this study, which is to assemble a library of stellar spectra obtained by HST/STIS and to identify the most useful, discriminating stellar features in the near- and mid-ultraviolet parts of the spectrum. Our work is supported by Hubble Archival Research grant, HST AR-10659.
