[172.07] Radioactivity in the Chandra Ms Observation of Cas A

M. F. Theiling, M. D. Leising (Clemson University)

The recent million second observation of Cassiopeia A by the Chandra X-ray Observatory has granted a wealth of publicly available data on this object. We discuss and report on our usage of this observation in our ongoing search for the K-alpha line of 44Sc resulting from the electron capture decay of 44Ti. The importance of this line lies in determining the abundance of 44Ti synthesized in the supernova, an important value in both supernova modeling and Galactic chemical evolution. The possible effects of the ionization history of the remnant on both decay rate and line emission are noted and applied to previously reported X-ray flux limits.
