[53.03] High resolution spectroscopy of multi-phase ISM

Y. Yao (MIT)

We present a high resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the cold, cool, and hot phase ISM toward the LMXB 4U 1820-303 (Galactic coordinates l,b =2.79, 7.91 and distance = 7.6 kpc). The OI, OII, OIII, OVII, OVIII, and NeIX absorption lines are clearly detected in Chandra grating spectrum, which enable us to measure the corresponding ionic column densities through much of the Galactic disk. Complemented this measures with pulsar dispursion measurement and with the O and Ne absorption edge measures, we have constrained the O, Ne abundances, and the Ne/O abundance ratios in different phase ISM, which are consistent with solar values. By comparing the thermal pressure in different phases, we also obtain the first observational constraint on the global filling factor of the hot phase ISM.
