[146.05] Chandra and Hubble surveys of the Orion Nebula Stellar Population

E. D. Feigelson, K. V. Getman (PSU)

The Chandra X-ray Observatory has recently completed study of a 2-week-long observation of the Orion Nebula, an order of magnitude deeper than previous X-ray studies of any star forming regions. Results from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP), many appearing in a special October 2005 issue of ApJ Supplements, give new insights into diverse topics: stellar membership of the lightly obscured Orion Nebula Cluster and the embedded OMC-1 clusters; multiplicity of massive stars; pre-main sequence magnetic activity and flaring; ionization of molecular clouds and protoplanetary disks; interstellar gas-to-dust ratio; and Herbig-Haro outflow shocks. Comparison between the COUP and HST Orion Survey memberships will be reported, along with examination of important individual stellar systems.
