We present GALEX FUV (1530A) and NUV (2310) and VLA HI spectral line observations of the interacting/merging systems Mk 348, NGC 7252, VV 114, and NGC 4038/9. All systems exhibit extended low surface brightness UV emission outside of their main bodies, in extended gaseous disks or tidal features. We find a good correlation between the HI surface density and UV surface brightness, with FUV emission consistently present when the gas surface density exceeds 2 Mo/pc2. This supports the idea of a star formation threshold surface density for extra-disk star formation.
