[188.09] The effect of dust on the appearance of the outer disks of spiral galaxies

C.C. Popescu, R.J. Tuffs (Max Planck Institut fuer Kernphysik, Heidelberg)

The ISOPHOT detection of dust in emission (Popescu & Tuffs 2003) beyond the truncation radius of a spiral galaxy disk raises the question of what is the effect of this dust on the radial distribution of light in the optical and near-infrared bands. Based on radiative transfer calculations, we show that the dust beyond the main optical disk of galaxies can produce a measurable signal of scattered light.
