[189.02] Composition of the ambient coma of Comet 9P/Tempel 1

L.M. Feaga (U. Maryland), Deep Impact Science Team

The High Resolution Instrument Infrared Spectrometer aboard the Deep Impact spacecraft acquired numerous spectra of comet 9P/Tempel 1 during its approach sequence. From this data, a thorough study of the ambient coma is made. The chemical makeup of the coma is examined and will be used as a baseline for comparison to the spectra acquired during the manmade impact on July 4, 2005. Radial north/south profiles of the comet are produced in order to determine any asymmetries in the composition of the coma. A natural outburst from the nucleus is seen in this subset of the Deep Impact data and will also be analyzed.
