[184.02] Multi-transition search for Class I methanol masers

R. Hicks, P. Pratap (MIT Haystack Observatory)

Using the Haystack 37m telescope and positional information from Spitzer Infrared Telescope data (Allen and Chavarria 2005), we have conducted a survey of the W5 molecular cloud for Class I methanol masers. Observations at 44 GHz were made of four regions in W5, three of which contained clusters of protostars. Though multiple integrations of the regions in W5 were performed, the results were inconclusive. There was also no detection of H2O maser emission toward these regions (except for one previously known source).

Additional observations at 44.069 GHz, 36.169 GHz, and 24.933 GHz were made of an area in the source M8E that had previously been found to contain a strong 44.069 GHz methanol maser. Results from M8E showed clearly identifiable masing in both the 44.069 GHz and 36.169 GHz transitions but none in the 24.933 GHz transition. These results were compared to multi-transitional observations of class I methanol masers in S255 and S235. These results will be presented in the context of a larger survey of Class I maser emission and will be used to test the hypothesis that the relative strengths of the various maser transitions can be used to examine the evolutionary state of high mass protostars. This project was made possible with funds from the NSF/REU program.
